The clarinet is a musical-instrument family belonging to the group known as the woodwind instruments. It has a single-reed mouthpiece, a straight cylindrical tube with an almost cylindrical bore, and a flared bell. A person who plays a clarinet is called a clarinetist (sometimes spelled clarinettist).
Modern professional-quality bass clarinets generally have additional keywork to low C. Among the less commonly encountered members of the clarinet family, contra-alto and contrabass clarinets may have keywork to low E♭, D, or C; the basset clarinet and basset horn generally go to low C.
A removable joint, with bridge keys, can be made but is discouraged due to the complexity of the extra keywork (note that once the player is accustomed to the extended bass clarinet, and a once a suitable case has been obtained, there is rarely if ever any reason to return to the short model).
